America’s Got Talent “The Millers” Hometown to be spotlighted

Lafayette Indian will have its own moment in the spotlight in an upcoming episode of America’s Got Talent.

An NBC camera crew taped show finalists and Lafayette natives L.D. and Cole Miller performing with older brother Clayton Miller at downtown Lafayette’s Java Roaster Sunday morning.

A three-person crew and a representative of the show followed the family around Lafayette. Java Roaster was bustling as dozens of fans caught wind of the Millers’ appearance and arrived as early as 8 a.m. to cheer them on.

“I wanted to show my support for them here,” said Perry Barbee of Lafayette. “They have talent, no doubt about it.”

L.D. and Cole will appear on the Aug. 16 finals episode of America’s Got Talent. The popular variety/reality show has earned several million viewers each week this summer so far.

A banner displaying “Welcome home L.D. & Cole Miller: Good luck in the finals” and signatures and messages of support from hundreds of the Millers’ Greater Lafayette fans was strung along some trees on North Third Street.

With Cole and Clayton on acoustic guitars, L.D. wailed on his harmonicas to the tunes of “Change” by Blind Melon and Clayton Miller Band originals “Gotta Leave” and “Low Down Dirty Blues.”

The Millers were still buzzing from their homecoming concert Saturday night at Riehle Plaza. L.D. and Cole came back from America’s Got Talent tapings where they have been locked into the semifinals for weeks. They were the first selected by judges Brandy, David Hasselhoff and Piers Morgan. They were joined by Clayton on guitar, father Larry Miller on bass and cousin Matt Miller on guitar. Matt Miller has been added as a permanent member of the family band.

Larry Miller marveled at the thousands who turned out Saturday night and the family and friends who needed more Miller time Sunday morning.

“It’s very heart-warming,” Larry Miller said.

Clayton Miller has been watching his brothers from his home in Lafayette.

“I get excited for them,” Clayton said. “I hope they do good.”

It had been months since Clayton had played with his brothers. He will get a full dose when all of the Millers go on a fall tour starting late this month, after the results of America’s Got Talent are announced Aug. 17.

“We’re already booked up,” Clayton said. “We’re going to be playing a lot of shows.”
